name is the only student-run publication at SUNY Buffalo to focus on publishing undergraduate poetry. Poets published in name have gone on to print work in such magazines as ixnay, Queen Street Quarterly, Anomaly, Lungfull!, Skanky Possum, Ferrum Wheel, Serving Suggestion, Outlet, Antennae, Basinski!, Endnote, & dANDdelion (to name a few) and to publish their own chapbooks with presses such as Blue Moon and Housepress.
name was founded in January 1998 by Jessica Smith, who put out the first issue (a run of 150 xeroxed, looseleaf copies) with the help of Matt Chambers, Rebecca Stigge, and Chris Fritton (who named name, "name"). Funding for the first issue was provided by Robert Creeley's Capen Chair, which had a bit of extra money due to Jorie Graham's absence from the Wednesdays at Four Plus series (she caught a cold and had to cancel).
Since 1998 name's budget has grown, and editors are now able to publish 2 perfect-bound, 60-80 page books a year (runs of about 300). name sells out within a few months; backissues of 1 and 2 are unavailable (see Subscribe to find out how to get 3, 4/5, and 6).

Work will not be returned. Although name receives submissions year-round, you should expect to hear from us only in October and February. You may also make a donation at a name reading or wherever you obtain your copy of name. As the magazine receives nearly enough funding from its sponsors to print copies, donations usually help to fund reading events, publicity, and related incidentals.
If you are a SUNY Buffalo student, your tuition covers the cost of your copy of name. Therefore, you can get name for free in 303 Clemens. However, about 10% of name's budget does come from voluntary student contributions. Donate what you can to keep name in business.
