looktouch is an ongoing project in visual poetry and poetics perpetrated by Jessica Smith.
Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Jessica received her B.A. summa cum laude in English and Comparative Literature: Language Theory and her M.A. in Comparative Literature from SUNY Buffalo, where she participated in the Poetics Program and started the poetry magazine name. Her M.A. thesis, "Deleuze and the Politics of Sound in Kafka and Duras," can be accessed online at Lulu.com. After spending some time in Sweden, Germany and Austria, she returned to the U.S. to pursue a Ph.D. in English at the University of Virginia, a degree program which she did not complete. Jessica currently resides in Buffalo where she edits Outside Voices, an umbrella for Outside Voices Books, Take-Home Project Chapbooks, and Foursquare magazine.
Jessica is the author of one full-length collection of poetry, Organic Furniture Cellar. Since 2001, her work has been published in American Weddings, Anomaly, Antennae, apocryphaltext, Cannibal, The Continental Review, dANDelion, Drill, ecopoetics, Ferrum Wheel, Filling Station, FOURSQUARE, ixnay, Literature Compass, Mantis, name, OEI (in Swedish), The Other Herald, Outlet, Phoebe, Queen Street Quarterly, Rock Heals, rout/e, Serving Suggestion, Small Press Traffic, Small Town, xtant, and Zinhar (in Turkish), as well as in anthologies Face Time (Cy Gist Press) and A Sing Economy (Flim Forum).
Jessica's chapbooks include bird-book (Detumescence), The Plasticity of Poetry and Telling Time (No Press), Shifting Landscapes (above/ground press), and butterflies (Big Game Books). Except for bird-book, which is available both as a .pdf file at Detumescence and as a self-published chapbook at Etsy, these small-run chapbooks are now out of print. However, much of Jessica's work can be accessed here, including .pdf chapbooks blueberries, butterflies, Discourse Networks, and Relation; short series Buffalo, Daughter, Evolocution, and Pressed Flowers; recordings, visual poetry, and pictures of poetry plastique.
